Stonyridge Pilgrim 2020
New Zealand’s first Rhone Ranger wine, made with the classic ”GSM” (Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah) varieties of the south of France. 2019 was a great vintage for Syrah on Waiheke, and this estate-grown Northern Rhone blend is a perfect exemplar of the vintage.
Black plum and blueberry are followed by very pretty florals and baking spice on the nose. The palate is harmonious, with fine structure and soft acidity.
For hundreds of years, pilgrims have passed through Provence, Languedoc, and Rousillon on their way to Spain and the church of Santiago de Compostel. Their symbols are the cross and the scallop shell which appear on wall frescoes throughout the region, indicating that pilgrims are welcome and, more importantly, safe.

VINEYARD
The Spring / early Summer was warm and settled after flowering, and drought conditions started early. As a result of the incredibly dry summer, the berry size remained small. Sunny, settled and endless Bluebird days were the hallmarks of the 2020 vintage. Fruit condition was perfect, and we were able to harvest fruit at the optimal time for each and every parcel. Tonnages were low, mainly due to tiny berry size, but the crop was even and open, ensuring great exposure to the sun.
TASTING NOTES
The 2020 Pilgrim is aromatic and perfumed, with wonderful florals and ripe dark forest fruit. The palate is concentrated with firm ripe tannin and incredible length. Sealed with NDTech TCA free cork.
